There’s so much more to German cuisine than just schnitzel and currywurst. Each state has its specialty to offer. For example, Bremen has Butterkuchen, which is exactly what it’s translated to: butter cake. Food is the gateway to culture. You can learn so much about the history of a country through its food, and it makes for a great cultural experience. Through pretzels, currywurst, and Berliner, you can interact with locals and learn something new about your new home. This student snack guide will help you discover the tastiest German snacks and local favorites worth trying.

Popular German Snacks for Students

Savory Favorites: If you’re into savoury snacks, there’s a wide variety to choose from. In Bremen, you’ll find thick, salty pretzels that make you feel like you’re eating a fun-shaped bread. You can find them in local supermarkets as well during events such as Freimarkt. My personal favourite is the currywurst, which consists of a German sausage(wurst) lathered in curry ketchup. It’s usually eaten with bread. A fan favourite, however, is the Döner Kebab. While it has Turkish origins, it’s become a staple in German cuisine and culture.

Sweet Treats: For my fellow sweet-toothed people, this is for you. German pastries like Berliner, Donauwelle, and Streuselschnecke are to die for. A Berliner or a Krapfen, depending on whether you’re in the North or the South of Germany, is a jam-filled donut dusted with powdered sugar. A Donauwelle is a cake layered with cream, cherries, and a nice chocolate topping. Lastly, the streuselschnecke is kind of similar to a cinnamon roll and has a nice sugar crumble on top. It pairs really well with coffee.

Where to Find Local Snacks in Bremen Supermarkets and Bakeries

Bremen snacks, savoury or sweet, can easily be found in supermarkets like Aldi or Lidl. For sweet treats, bakeries are the best place to find them freshly made. They’ll be slightly more affordable compared to those in the supermarket.

Markets and Street Vendors

If you want to splurge a bit more, then markets are the best place to get snacks. In the Bremen city center, by the Weser river, you can find stalls selling pretzels, currywurst, and more. Freimarkt and Weihnachtsmarkt are special occasions where you can find all the German snacks mentioned. Döners are everywhere, and you’ll likely have a Döner stand near you.

Exploring German foods to try is one of the best ways to feel at home in a new country. From bakeries to street markets, there’s something for every taste and budget. So, don’t be shy, dive into these local treats and let Bremen snacks introduce you to German culture in the sweetest way.
