Moving to university from home is probably one of the most stressful parts of university as a first year, apart from exam season. It’s easy to overpack and bring things you’ll never use, or worse, forget essentials and scramble to buy it last minute. Here’s what I would’ve told first-year me when packing up for university for the first time. Whether you're moving into a dorm for the first time or just looking for a refresher, here’s a guide to the essentials for university that every first year should have.

Must-Have Dorm Items

You have to learn to make the most of a space while still feeling comfortable.

Comfort and Organization Bedding: While the university does not provide bedding, I’d suggest bringing a bedsheet or two as well as a pillow from home. They come in handy when you’re homesick and want to be reminded of home. Plus, you’ll have a bedsheet rotation instead of constantly rewashing the same one. This might not exactly be bedding related but bring your plushies if you have any! Not only do they liven up your room, but they’re also a great remedy for homesickness.

Storage Solutions: Space can seem limited in the rooms, so I’d highly recommend bringing under-bed storage bins, collapsible laundry baskets, and over-the-door organizers. Even better if they’re able to be folded so it saves space in your suitcase!

Desk Setup: The university provides a desk lamp for your desk so bringing one is unnecessary and will only take up space in your suitcase. You should however bring trinkets from home to decorate your desk or desk decor such as fairy lamps. I would also highly suggest bringing a comfortable chair cushion as the chairs in case you find that the chairs can be uncomfortable.

Personal Essentials Cooking Basics: Bring your favorite mugs and bowl as well as a water bottle. I would also highly recommend bringing a kettle if you can. If not you can always order one online or buy one from Kaufland or Action (nearby supermarkets). Bringing snacks and teas from your home country can also help you create a nice cozy space in your room for you to relax with your friends.

Cleaning Supplies: As far as cleaning supplies go, I wouldn’t recommend packing any from home but rather buying cleaning supplies when you’re more settled in after you arrive. All the college offices also provide cleaning supplies that you can borrow.

Toiletries & Personal Care: A shower caddy, towels, flip-flops are essential for shared bathrooms.

Academic and Social Must-Haves

Beyond setting up your dorm, you’ll also need to be prepared for classes and making new friends. Here’s what you shouldn’t forget:

Study Supplies Tech Gadgets: A reliable laptop, a good pair of headphones, and an external hard drive or USB drive for backups are essentials for university life.

Stationery & Notebooks: Even if you take most notes digitally, having a few notebooks, pens, and highlighters is always useful. Desk Accessories: Sticky notes, index cards, and a planner can help keep your studies organized.

Socializing Essentials Games & Entertainment: A deck of cards, a small board game, or even a speaker for music can make socializing with roommates and friends easier.

Room Decor: Posters, fairy lights, and a few personal touches can make your dorm feel more like home.

While packing for university can be overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. With a solid packing list and a little planning, you can make the transition much smoother.

Cheers to a great start to your first year!
